today my husband steve and i have been married for 19 years. before i ever saw his face, i fell in love with his voice. i moved into a co-ed honors dorm at marshall university my senior year of college. i went to a mandatory floor meeting at the beginning of the fall semester. some guy from the back who was in charge of renting out refrigerators began to speak. the voice was strong, confident, mesmerizing and i wanted to turn around to see who the voice belonged to but was too embarrassed. after the meeting, i tried to listen for that voice in the midst of the commotion but had no success, so i went back to my new dorm room. about 30 minutes later, i heard a knock at my door. i opened it to discover a very handsome guy standing there, somewhat nervous, with his hands shoved in his jean pockets. he asked in that marvelous voice i had been attracted to earlier, “can i borrow a pencil?” i laughed and replied, “is that the best you can come up with?”
and so began our soul-connecting friendship and torrid love affair. after having three sons, starting and pastoring a church, cancer, chemotherapy, surgeries, the untimely death of both of our fathers - after all that - we are still best friends and are still madly in love.
