the next day i was waiting for my friend laura markham to get home....she lived on st. mary's lane, across the street from me. i was sitting at a picnic table in her backyard. a large field complete with dirt trails, bordered the property line of laura's yard. this field was the setting for many of my childhood memories. we called it the racetrack because it was a perfect place to ride dirtbikes, do wheelies, etc.
while i was sitting at that table, i bowed my head, and prayed really HARD for God to reveal Himself to me in a miraculous kind of way. i didn't realize then, as i do now, the miracles, thousands of miracles that surround all of us every single day if we just open our eyes and truly SEE.
but as i prayed, i felt something pecking at my bare feet....it was a baby quail!! it was by itself, at least 20 feet from the field where it must have come from. it didn't run when i picked it up. it was the most beautiful thing i had ever seen. of the countless times i went exploring for frogs, insects, turtles, etc. in that field, i had never seen a quail!! my dad told me it was a bobwhite and that it's mom may have been lunch for the many stray cats that ran our neighborhood. so i tried to take care of my little miracle, my little sign from God. i kept the bobwhite baby in a big cardboard box....my dad put a lightbulb in there to help keep the baby warm at night. it lived for two days. i found it stiff with death on the 3rd day but wasn't even tempted to ask God to resurrect it - He had already answered my prayer.
