You Should Be a Painter

You have the vision, patience, and skill to bring your unique visions to canvas.
And you're even tempered enough not to cut your ear off in the process!

as early as i can remember i have loved art. every year i would ask for an art kit for christmas. when i was in 5th grade, santa surprised me with not only a deluxeart kit but also a full size wooden easel and canvases!! i was so delighted! i had no idea what to do with those supplies - the paints and pastels....i can still recall the smell inside that art box....linseed oil, turpentine, paints, charcoal ....
and i remember the cool kneaded eraser and the waxy disposable palette paper pad. nothing made me happier than drawing and painting and fiddling with art supplies.

i never had art class in school. i wish so much i would have had an art teacher who could have encouraged me in the visual arts. when i was a senior, my guidance counselor "guided" me away from an art degree and towards one that would bring the assurance of financial provision.
and so i sat in pre med classes - kinesiology, organic chemistry, anatomy and physiology - and doodled to the nth degree.....my notes were mostly poetry and illustrations - color and design experiments.......

and so i have found art in odd places in my life - the colors of my walls, the cool palette of my perennial and herb gardens, scrapbooking the memories of my life....
and more recently, painting and photography. cancer and chemotherapy were blessings that allowed my life to slow down to a pace that allowed me to learn to paint....play the guitar...travel to italy.....hone my photography skills.....and journal JOURNAL journal!! while i was bald from treatment - the creativity and love of art within me flourished!!! praise God!

not sure how to finish this post - my 4th graders are coming back from music class -

i'll leave you with this quote from henri matisse...
Creativity takes courage
