the picturesque vermont cow - they are everywhere! we had to stop on a major highway to let a dairy farmer lead his herd across (hopefully to get milked from the size of those swollen utters!) i love everything about vermont except it's huge production of dairy products. i don't buy into many conspiracy theories but i sincerely believe the Dairy Council has many of us believing a bunch of lies! i first became aware of the ill effects of dairy on humans while i was doing graduate work in nutrition at Middle Tennessee State University. the more i researched, the more i realized that milk does NOT do a body good. when i removed dairy from my own diet, i felt like a new person. why did we ever start consuming milk from another mammal anyway? i know that many of you will think me a heretic for preaching the no dairy gospel - but i firmly believe that we are better off with out the mucus producing, allergy causing, artery clogging white poison in our systems. i slip every now and then and eat some really good cheese or ice cream (especially this week in vermont - the dairy state!) but i do believe i am so better off without milk products in my diet.
i get a daily newsletter from robert cohen, known as the notmilk man notmilk.com. this guy knows his stuff and cites scientific studies NOT funded by the Dairy Council. here's his mission statement -
* The Dairy Education Board is a public information association that has been formed to let America know that cow's milk is not nature's perfect food for people.
* We are breaking down the greatest myth in America: that milk does a body good. By establishing a stance against the dairy industry and the tens of billions of dollars spent in propaganda activities such as the milk mustache campaign, we will tell America the other side of the milk story.
* This group has been established to put the discussion in perspective. The dairy industry has invested an immense amount of money and Americans are still getting sick, breaking bones, getting cancer and osteoporosis.
* The secret to the "Fountain of Youth" is giving up milk and dairy products.
here's a link to a famous letter sent by a surgeon to all his patients.
and i just feel so bad for the cows....getting pumped full of hormones and milked three times a day!

Free the cows! But the cows always look so happy in the California cheese commercials. They claim that happy cows come from California. Maybe only the cows in Vermont are unhappy. But what about the cows in Wisconsin?
i have a very happy relationship with my cheese and although he may not be good for me, i'm not ready to break up with him.
:)
But what about my cereal? Ice Cream......uugghhh.....
Ok, I will jump on your band wagon jaki....Kill the cows...eat more hamburgers! :) Great post, it made me laugh because I can totally hear this conversation...in our living room, while Steve and I are pigging out on Chocolate Chip Cookies and a giant glass of cold milk!
Be still my heart. You sound like my daughter, Anita. I do think something should be done about injecting hormones into our food supply. It's why my family still raise their own feed, chickens, beef, etc. If you can't give up milk (I can't), it does help to buy organic and drink skim. I'm a country girl who used to milk cows, and make butter. Moderation in all things, I guess. I've been on a natural organic crusade since the 70's, and it's great to see all the interest increasing. I'll have to read up on this milk issue again. Better get back to working on Dawn's dress. Great Vermont pictures!!
